Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Stress Urinary Incontinence Described

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition whereby the muscular infrastructure in a woman’s pelvic region begins to progressively weaken.  This is often due to many of the normal experiences in the life of a woman, most notably childbirth.  As a result of the weakening of this muscle structure, the organs that sit near this area including the bladder can drop and push down into the vagina, leading to intense and unbearable pain.

Stress urinary incontinence is another condition that tends to affect women as they age, and SUI involves an uncontrollable leaking of urine when pressure is exerted on a bladder that’s been weakened over time.  This weakened bladder will eventually lose its place within a woman’s anatomy and begin to leak at unexpected times.  Generally, women are most at risk for this issue arising when they are active.

Transvaginal Mesh Products – How They Work

Given the unfortunate circumstances that surround the two health conditions above, different companies including Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson and others began to release different products that were meant to help hold the organs and internal structures of women with POP and SUI in place.  These products were known as transvaginal mesh products, and they generally worked by being implanted into a woman’s body and acting as sort of a sling that held the structures together.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before reports of serious problems with these transvaginal mesh products began to arise.  Specifically, some of the models that were implanted began to erode inside of the body and lead to other, even more serious health problems and risks.  Eventually, women who had used these products would have to have them removed to minimize the chance of additional harm.
